Ohio Sports Betting Rules Don’t Allow College Player Props

Officials at the Ohio Casino Control Commission (OCCC) has amended its rules to prohibit college sports player prop bets. Sportsbooks in the state of Ohio are now prohibited to offer player prop bets involving college athletes. This comes on the heals of a request of the Ohio governor and the NCAA. The state gaming regulator concluded that banning wagers on college athlete’s performance will decrease incidences of students being harassed by bettors unhappy with their play. The amendment is also expected to safeguard the integrity of sports gaming and will be in the best interest of the public. The Ohio Casino Control Commission has given sportsbooks just a week to remove college player props from their boards.

Charlie Baker, the president of the NCAA, celebrated the decision by the OCCC. He stated that player prop betting has caused a lot of distress to student athletes online. College athletes have reported receiving threats on social media. Some college athletes have faced heckling and even physical abuse in person. Baker thanked the OCCC for removing player props involving college athletes. The rule goes into effect March 1. The OCCC said its regulated sportsbooks took in about $104.6 million on college sports player props in 2023. That is less than 1.5% of overall money wagered.

Ohio sportsbooks opposed banning college player prop bets. Their main concern is that bettors will take their money to offshore sportsbooks where they can still wager on college sports player props. The OCCC does not believe that will be the case. They consider that a faulty assumption by the sportsbooks.
