Sports betting is getting closer and closer to being legal in the state of North Carolina. In North Carolina, sports books must form partnerships with a team, venue, NASCAR, or the PGA Tour to be able to operate a sportsbook. The North Carolina State Lottery Commission is handling the sports betting licensing and will govern their forthcoming operations. The state lottery agency told interested sportsbooks to submit their application by December 27th. The bidding window closed with seven applications lottery officials said. That means there were five other sports books who applied besides DraftKings and BetMGM. Those five are ESPN Bet, FanDuel, Bet365, Fanatics, and Underdog Sports. Licenses cost $1 million and sportsbooks will share 18% of their gross proceeds with the state.
DraftKings is using its long standing relationship with NASCAR in its quest to run a retail and online sportsbook in North Carolina. Vermont is expected to be the next state where DraftKings will launch a mobile operation. That will be the 26th state that they are legal in. They are hoping North Carolina will be the 28th state.
